Sophie has spent a lifetime guarding her heart and a long-held secret. It will take all of her courage to speak the truth and embrace the future God has planned for her.

The year is 1886, and Sophie Robillard returns to Hickory Ridge, Tennessee, after living in Texas for 15 years as the ward of Ada and Wyatt Caldwell. Now that the town's population has exploded, her intention is to reopen the long-defunct newspaper office that so captivated her when she was still an orphan. The rejection she experienced as a child because of her mixed parentage has left deep scars that she hopes can be healed by succeeding in this new venture.

Ethan Heyward was uprooted from his home as a boy following an unspeakable tragedy. Horace Blakely, a millionaire businessman, took Ethan under his wing and eventually put him in charge of the construction and opening of Blue Smoke resort in Hickory Ridge. They meet when Sophie arrives at Blue Smoke to interview Ethan for her newspaper. As their attraction deepens, each hides a secret that, if revealed, could end their relationship
When I received this book- I didn't realize that I had read the first book in the series.  I was mainly attracted to the fact that the cover was beautiful and a winter scene.  I was hoping for some sort of story that tied in the holidays because it is would line up with this time of year perfectly.  When I looked at the back cover, I realized I had read the first book in this series and loved it!

This book picks up with a character from the first, Sophie, the orphan that Ada and Wyatt adopt at the end of the first book.  Sophie is grown now and is returning to Hickory Hollow to restart the local newspaper and to fufill her dreams of becoming a newspaper woman.  Sophie is as opinionated and spunky as she was in the first book, but it is obvious that she has grown as a character since we have last read about her.

I enjoyed this book.  I will admit- historical Christian fiction that takes places in a newspaper setting seems to be a dime a dozen lately.  I wasn't incredibly thrilled with the fact that that was her occupation.  It did, however, fit with the character and the theme of the entire series.  It would have been odd for the little girl in book one who was obsessed with stories and writing to do anything other than that for her occupation.  The romance in this story wasn't pushed, there was no instant love, and it took until the very last page for the couple to "get together".

I enjoyed reading more about race relations in this book- much like the first book.  I thought it was an interesting take on the time period- one that many authors choose to avoid.  I enjoy this author and I am really looking forward to more of her books in the future (she has a new series coming out next year)
