An action-packed and suspenseful sequel to The Witch Hunter, perfect for fans of Graceling and the Grisha Trilogy.

"I think, in time, you'll either be my greatest mistake or my greatest victory."

Former witch hunter Elizabeth Grey is hiding within the magically protected village of Harrow, evading the price put on her head by Lord Blackwell, the usurper king of Anglia. Their last encounter left Blackwell ruined, but his thirst for power grows stronger every day. He's readying for a war against those who would resist his rule--namely Elizabeth and the witches and wizards she now calls her allies.

Having lost her stigma, a magical source of protection and healing, Elizabeth's strength is tested both physically and emotionally. War always means sacrifice, and as the lines between good and evil blur once more, Elizabeth must decide just how far she'll go to save those she loves.

"[Filled] with everything a good fantasy book needs: swords, poison, black magic, and betrayal."--April Tucholke, author ofBetween the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea, on The Witch Hunter

The King Slayer...

I read The Witch Hunter earlier this year, finally, and I loved it! I am so glad that I got the chance to read the sequel so soon after. And I am even more glad that I loved it! Virginia Boecker is just plain fabulous!

The King Slayer starts up two months after the explosive ending of The Witch Hunter. Elizabeth is finally recovered from her encounter with Blackwell, physically at least. She is being summoned to a hearing in the witch/wizarding community of Harrow to determine whether she will be allowed to stay, exiled or put to death. While Elizabeth's life is in upheavel, Blackwell is on the throne. He has begun building an army, determined to defeat the witch's and wizards who aren't under his thumb. Elizabeth's only chance to stay in Harrow comes from her knowledge of Blackwell. Everything and everyone is hanging in the balance, and it may be up to one girl to save them all.

One of Ms. Boecker's greatest gifts is her ability to bring to life such amazing, deeply real and relate-able characters. Every character that you come across in her books comes to life immediately. Whether it is a character, like Elizabeth, who is deeply self-loathing, unsure of who she is or where she belongs, but also incredibly loyal and fierce, or John whose heart he wears on his sleeve, a man who lives for healing others, who is changing into someone unrecognizable for reasons outside of his control and it makes your heart bleed for him. Then you have the ones like Blackwell, who is rotten to the core of his being, and as much as you hate him, you are glad for him because of the depth he brings to the story.  Every character that we get the chance to know in these pages is a character unto themselves. They could each hold a story of their own, and that is an awesome gift!

The King Slayer is about so much more than a fight to bring down a human monster. It is about losing yourself, finding yourself, growing as a person, and as a friend. It is about finding a family, and learning the meaning of friendship. Its about going against the grain, doing things your way, even though you might screw it up. There is action, drama, romance, friendship, fighting, MAGIC. Anything that your heart desires.

Virginia Boecker definitely has a fan in me. I think, if you gave her a shot, she would have one in you too. SO, yes, I absolutely recommend this series, 100%. I cannot wait to read whatever comes next!
