The Dancing Master is so different than Klassen's other books.  In a majority of Klassen's books the protagonist is usually quiet, calm, smart, and a bit mousy.  In The Dancing Master, Julia is flirtatious and a bit superficial at times.  She is selfish and tends not to think about the feelings of  others- her thoughts are consumed by how she can escape Devonshire and her home as quickly as possible and how to be able to travel the world.

Likewise, Alec is not the common Christian romance hero.  Typically they are strapping and large, with a kind heart and a temper.  Alec is considered a dandy.  He dresses fancily but doesn't have the lineage to go with it.  He is concerned with how he looks and isn't one to get his hands dirty.  I must say, it was a bit odd reading about this kind of character as the main hero.

The background characters really shine in The Dancing Master.  We have love triangles, drama, intrigue and enough secrets to make this book into a reality show- The Real Housewives of Devonshire!  I think perhaps that I enjoyed all of the background plot even more than I enjoyed the main romance in this book.  I would be eager to read a book about Julia's mother- I think it would make a very interesting and exciting novel.

All in all The Dancing Master was a decent read.  I can't say it was a favorite of mine from this author, but it was pretty good!
