Haven Blog Tour
Thanks to TLC Book Tours, we're pleased to present a review for Haven, a zombie novel by Laury Falter. Make sure to check out the rest of the tour stops to see other reviews!
Haven is generally a very fast-paced read, with a few slower sequences as you get to know Kennedy, Harrison, and the other teens trapped inside their high school. Even though the characters are all sort of stock characters -- the nerd, the jock, the popular girl, etc. -- Falter does a good job of building them all up and making you care about them. I was rooting for everyone to survive, even the characters I maybe didn't like so much. There are some definite mysteries at the heart of this story: what's causing the outbreak, and what, exactly, is up with Harrison? You'll want to keep reading to find out both of these things.
The romance was a little predictable and forced, and sometimes the dialogue there got a little cheesy, but fortunately, most of the book is given over to action sequences and group scenes where everyone tries to figure out their survival. This does end on a cliffhanger, so reader beware! If you're looking for lots of answers, you're going to have to hang on for the next book.
Aside from lots of zombie violence and a few make-out scenes, this is a very clean read. I would recommend it to fans of the zombie genre in general, and also The Walking Dead (misfit group of people forced to work together for survival).

In this quick-to-read zombie story, high school student Kennedy finds herself a part of a rag-tag group of kids trying to survive, well, the apocalypse. Fortunately, she's been well prepared for having to fight for survival, by her soldier father, a fact that Kennedy keeps a secret from everyone. She's got a lot of secrets, though, and she's not the only one. Harrison, the new kid in school, has his eye on Kennedy, but always keeps his distance, until now, when he and Kennedy are among the last standing. They team up well together to use their special skills -- Kennedy's combat and survival skills, and Harrison's, well, that's a spoiler -- to help keep their group safe.On an ordinary day in early September, Kennedy Shaw leaves for school unaware that within a few minutes the world she knows will be gone - succumbed to an outbreak of epidemic proportions. After finding a safe haven inside the security of her enclosed high school, she learns that four others have survived, one being a bold, mysterious transfer student from Texas whose unruffled demeanor harbors more than a cool interest in her. As they struggle to survive the dead fighting their way inside, will Kennedy discover there is more to life than survival? And will she and the others find a way to live in this terrifying new world?
