Wow what a thrilling and entertaining read! I am a fan of Julie Klassen but this has solidified her as one of my favorite Christian authors. I am a fan of gothic novels like Jane Eyre and the other works of the Bronte sisters. Klassen has captured the essence of those novels in The Tutor's Daughter.
Emma is smart in a time when book knowledge is looked down on upon. She is facing spinsterhood and is unwilling to take chances when it comes to adventure and her life. Her life is summed up in a precious teacup and saucer that she has. Emma refuses to use it- waiting for the perfect moment. Emma is waiting for the perfect moment for her life to begin and missing out on life while she waits. When an opportunity to travel to Cornwall to tutor with her father, Emma takes the chance to give her grieving father healing.
Many mysteries surround the estate Emma now resides in- who is playing the piano and making awful sounds at night? Does she have a secret admirer or someone trying to threaten her? What does she think about Phillip and Henry now that they are grown? This book was incredibly entertaining and witty. I found myself reluctantly putting it down and finding minutes throughout my day to savor a few pages at a time. Emma is a heroine I want to root for- not some striking beauty, but one who still has just as much worth. (Besides who doesn't like a fellow bookworm?)
The Tutor's Daughter is an excellent addition to the list of works by Julie Klassen and will be sure to add to her number of fans!
