Alone Yet Not Alone

Image
Alone Yet Not Alone By  Corinne Jackson Published on November 27, 2012 Published by Zonderkidz Source: From Publisher for Review The Leininger family settled deep within America's new frontier in the Blue Mountains of Pennsylvania. A sudden Indian raid changed their lives forever. This story retells the heroic and daring escape of Barbara Leininger, and the touching reunion with her sister, Regina, after nine years. It also gives us an endearing portrayal of the love between family members and the strength of childhood memories. Father and Mother Leininger's commitment to 'hide' God's Word in the hearts of their children Alone Yet Not Alone is the engaging story of two sisters that is set in my own area.  I grew up in the Appalachian mountains of Pennsylvania.  Our area is rich with history of the 1700s and 1800s.  I was constantly surrounded by historical stories and local lore.  I was instantly attracted to this novel because it was set in Pennsyl...

Fang Girl

Image
Fang Girl By Helen Keeble Published on September 11th, 2012 Published by: Harper Teen Before you read the summary in pink...  read the review below!!!!!!!!!!!!! Things That Are Destroying Jane Greene’s Undead Social Life Before It Can Even Begin: 1) A twelve-year-old brother who’s convinced she’s a zombie. 2) Parents who are begging her to turn them into vampires. 3) The pet goldfish she accidentally turns instead. 4) Weird superpowers that let her rip the heads off of every other vampire she meets.(Sounds cool, but it doesn’t win you many friends.) 5) A psychotic vampire creator who’s using her to carry out a plan for world domination. And finally: 6) A seriously ripped vampire hunter who either wants to stake her or make out with her. Not sure which. Being an undead, eternally pasty fifteen-year-old isn’t quite the sexy, brooding, angst-fest Jane always imagined.... Helen Keeble’s riotous debut novel combines the humor of Vladimir Tod with Ally Carter’s spot-on ...

Dear Jane Austen.....

Image
Dearest Jane, Can I call you Jane?  I hope so because I feel like I have known you my entire life.  Do you realize how important you are?  Would it terrify you to know that you have set the standard for every relationship in my life and created the ideal man for me (and every other female out there)?        http://whatwouldelizabethbennetdo.tumblr.com/post/33829055379 Pride and Prejudice- we go way back. Pride and Prejudice was the first book I bought for myself- more specifically THIS hot pink hardback version of Pride and Prejudice. It has held secret notes, important papers, and has been read so many times it no longer lays flat or even.  Pride and Prejudice was my entry into "classics" and made me fall in love with so many other books that I never would have bothered trying (including that OTHER Jane the Bronte sisters imagined up). Lizzie Bennett is the ultimate heroine.  She is smart but not prideful,...

Beautiful Music for Ugly Children

Image
Beautiful Music for Ugly Children By  Kirstin Cronn-Mills Published on October 8, 2012 Published by: Flux Source: Netgalley "This is Beautiful Music for Ugly Children, on community radio 90.3, KZUK. I'm Gabe. Welcome to my show." My birth name is Elizabeth, but I'm a guy. Gabe. My parents think I've gone crazy and the rest of the world is happy to agree with them, but I know I'm right. I've been a boy my whole life. When you think about it, I'm like a record. Elizabeth is my A side, the song everybody knows, and Gabe is my B side--not heard as often, but just as good. It's time to let my B side play. I am always anxious when reading "issues" books that have anything to do with gender, sexuality, or mental illness.  They're issues which are close to me personally and which I feel are really important to get right.  Getting them wrong is a disservice to readers in general, and to people who may identify with those char...

What's Next?

Image
So it's been quite a while since I've done one of these.  I finally have a bit of a break before I need to go back to reading stuff to meet some blog tour deadlines, though, so it's time!  And once again I've got too many choices, so I'm going to let you all pick for me.  Here are some of the things I've been waiting to have a chance to read: Midwinterblood By  Marcus Sedgwick Seven stories of passion and love separated by centuries but mysteriously intertwined—this is a tale of horror and beauty, tenderness and sacrifice. An archaeologist who unearths a mysterious artifact, an airman who finds himself far from home, a painter, a ghost, a vampire, and a Viking: the seven stories in this compelling novel all take place on the remote Scandinavian island of Blessed where a curiously powerful plant that resembles a dragon grows. What binds these stories together? What secrets lurk beneath the surface of this idyllic countryside? And what might be powe...

Best Book Ever: Looking Forward to 2013

Image
My to-read pile is toppling over, and that's just with books which have already come out.  So of course I wanted to find out what else I could add to the pile by asking our contributors what book they're most looking forward to in 2013 .   Check out everyone's picks below, and add your favorite in the comments. My pick is Untold by Sarah Rees Brennan (Book 2 in Lynburn Legacy). I read UNSPOKEN about a month ago and if you live anywhere near me, converse with me online, or ending up behind me in the grocery store check-out line, you've heard how much I loved this book. I laughed so loud and so often that my poor husband (who was usually sleeping while I read) decided, "I either have to read this book or ban it from your night time reading." (He's currently chuckling through chapter six). It was one of those books where I looked up the release date to the sequel as soon as I finished the last page. And then woke him up (again) to moan, "WHY...
