The cover: I will say that for the first book, I enjoyed the white hand drawn cover more than the cover that had a model on it. I think I would have liked a hand drawn one on this one also. The model is very pretty and looks like who I picture Nimira to be, however, some of the whimsy and magic seems to be lost on these covers. They are very beautiful, but not my favorite.
The characters: I loved the relationship between Nimira and Erris, even though there was a great deal of tension between them. I liked seeing Erris as more than a two dimensional character. In this sequel, I was given the opportunity to see the hurt, anger, and sadness inside of Erris from being trapped in an automaton's body for so long. A majority of this book spends time with new characters- most of the characters from the first book are not included in this book at all. Ordorio Valdana who is both a very powerful sorcerer and the husband of Erris's sister plays a mysterious but large role in this book. We also get to know his daughter and a jinn (genie) who is given the task to kill Erris.
The story: I was a little confused getting into this story for two reasons. One it had been quite awhile since I had read Magic Under Glass and I other than Nimira and Erris, I was having trouble remembering the events of the first book. This book has more action than the first book, which was very fun to read, but it was also a very fast read. The love story in this book is very chaste and sweet. This is a book that I would absolutely recommend to younger readers, perhaps even middle grade readers. Although there will be no more stories about Nimira and Erris (for now at least) the story ended in a satisfying way, but not completely closed in case the author was interested in returning to this story in the future.
