Depressing. That is how I would categorize this book. Not bad, but depressing. The entire premise of this book is that someone close to her is going to die in the spring. Clara has a vision in late autumn that is at the funeral of someone she loves. (And no I won't tell you who!) I would say probably 2/3 of this book, perhaps more, leads up to the time this person dies. There isn't a great deal of action (one or two small skirmishes with Black Wings)- the death takes center stage in this book.
The writing was excellent, as expected. The complexities of the characters are fantastic. I really love the way Jeffery's character is developing. Out of all the characters- I find him the most believable for a teenage boy and the most interesting. I also really enjoyed meeting Clara and Jeffery's father. He was the most interesting person in this book. I really hope that we see much more of him in the third book. He is a very large missing piece in this puzzle and I was very happy to be introduced to him.
The only negative about this book? There was very little humor and action to offset the emotional drama. Yes, the book was excellent in a horribly heart breaking way. But the feeling of hopelessness was apparent throughout the book and there was little happiness to hold on to. I can't honestly say this is a book I want to read over and over again- it was too depressing.
That being said, it WAS a good book and worth the read- just don't go into it expecting a lot of action and lovey dovey parts- they aren't there.
