Waiting on Wednesday

Image
Wednesday is a day for looking forward to books coming out in the future.  I am always drawn to beautiful book covers and Everneath is absolutely a stunning book cover. I love the color of her dress, I love the swirls coming off of the top and waist of the dress and I absolutely love the smoke curling up around the model from the bottom of the picture.  This is an excellent cover.  I know that having female "headless" models in flowing dresses is a popular choice for paranormal ya books. The problem with that is that many of them don't make much sense with the characters in the stories or the cover ends up looking unfinshed.  This cover does it right.  The cover is beautiful and I can't wait to read the actual story! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Everneath By Brodi Ashton To Be Released:  January 2012 Published by: Balzer+Bray/HarperCollins Summary of Everneath taken from the author's website: Last spring, Nikki Beckett vanished, sucked into an underworld

The Vespertine

Image
The Vespertine by Saundra Mitchell Released March 2011 Summary from Goodreads:  It’s the summer of 1889, and Amelia van den Broek is new to Baltimore and eager to take in all the pleasures the city has to offer. But her gaiety is interrupted by disturbing, dreamlike visions she has only at sunset—visions that offer glimpses of the future. Soon, friends and strangers alike call on Amelia to hear her prophecies. However, a forbidden romance with Nathaniel, an artist, threatens the new life Amelia is building in Baltimore. This enigmatic young man is keeping secrets of his own—still, Amelia finds herself irrepressibly drawn to him. When one of her darkest visions comes to pass, Amelia’s world is thrown into chaos. And those around her begin to wonder if she’s not the seer of dark portents, but the cause. This is a book you need to read.  I loved this book!  The plot line was incredibly original- it was not a normal ya paranormal romance.  I loved the detail about t

Love and War

Image
Love and War By John and Staci Eldredge Published by Doubleday Religion (first printing 2009) Summary from Amazon.com: The pair addressed men and women separately in   Wild at Heart   (John) and   Captivating   (Stasi) and now put that knowledge together in a book on marriage. Christianity, they say, is a love story set amid war, with marriage a living, breathing portrait laid out before the eyes of the world so that they might see the story of the ages. For them, marriage is the perfect storm that brings together basic differences in men and women, individual styles of relating, sin, and brokenness. The Eldredges offer sound advice on topics such as the delights of companionship, understanding the enemy is Satan and not your spouse, finding your marriage's mission, taboo topics, and, yes, sex. They are honest and forthright, never skirting a difficult issue; instead, they offer hope, insight, and their own lives as examples of what God can accomplish. Their summation of

Growing Up Amish

Image
Growing Up Amish By Ira Wagner Published by:   Tyndale House Publishers, Inc. (June 28, 2011) Summary from Amazon.com One fateful starless night, 17-year-old Ira Wagler got up at 2 AM, left a scribbled note under his pillow, packed all of his earthly belongings into in a little black duffel bag, and walked away from his home in the Amish settlement of Bloomfield, Iowa. Now, in this heartwarming memoir, Ira paints a vivid portrait of Amish life—from his childhood days on the family farm, his Rumspringa rite of passage at age 16, to his ultimate decision to leave the Amish Church for good at age 26.  I have been reading a lot of Christian fiction that deals with Amish communities.  I was very curious about this book- mainly because I have become a little obsessed with the Amish population, especially in PA.  It was a good book- I am not really sure how you could call and autobiography anything but good.  The author is a talented writer- and I found myself surprised at how

Timeless

Image
Timeless By Alexandra Monir Published by:   Delacorte Books for Young Readers (January 11, 2011) Summary from Amazon.com: After her mother is killed in an automobile accident, Michelle Windsor is flown from her cozy Venice Beach, California, neighborhood to the palatial New York City home of her grandparents, whom, due to strained family relationships, she has never met. In this new, wealthy environment, she is introduced to the family history through a diary that transports her back to 1910 and details a feud between the Windsors and the Walkers. In a riff on Romeo and Juliet, Michelle falls for Phillip Walker and must decide how to extricate herself from their romance so that he can live a rich and fulfilling life in his own time and space.  I keep going back and forth about this book.  I love the premise.  It reminds me of a reverse "Time Traveler's Wife" or "Kate and Leopold" (the movie not the book).  I was hooked by the exhausting pace of the
