Baroness is the second book in the Daughters of Fortune series.  It is not absolutely necessary though that you have read the first book.  I didn't read the first book in the series and I didn't feel lost or confused at all.  The story starts slowly, with both girls acting selfishly in the streets of 1920's Paris.  As the story grows, we see the characters grow up and begin to make choices that affect not only them but the people around them- making waves in their family and cities.  With gangsters, 1920's baseball, aviators, and lush settings- Baroness is a book that transports you to another time and place and immerses you in history, love, and adventure.  I highly recommend this book to any reader!
